My Traditional South African Pumpkin Pie
Today I want to share with you one of my most famous recipes. Traditional South African Pumpkin Pie.
This is not your traditional Pumpkin Pie which the US usually eat to celebrate 4th of July Thanks Giving but my traditional South African version of Pumpkin Pie.
It is super easy to prepare and it uses very few ingredients. This dish goes well with most meals although in South Africa my family and friends always request my pumpkin pie for a good old Braai. Or as the rest of the world would say a BBQ. You can eat this served hot or cold.
This recipe is a keeper in the fridge for 2 days covered, although there won’t be any left. Yes, that’s right it lands up in those tummies really fast.
My South African Traditional Pumpkin Pie also freezes well. I would advise to use it within 1 month of freezing though. You can reheat it in the oven or air fryer for a few minutes.
There are two ways to enjoy this pie.
- With any dinner, chicken, turkey, meat, pork etc.
- As a DESSERT (yes you heard right as a dessert) everyone reckons it would go great served with cream and vanilla ice cream. It has a light fluffy texture almost like a cake and best of all it is super easy to make. You can use butter, oil or half butter and half oil. I personally think it comes out best when made with butter. Gotta love dishes made with butter!!!
So easy to make that the kids can do it. Better yet they will eat that pumpkin and want more. I guarantee it. Even those picky adults who don’t like to eat pumpkin will go crazy for another piece.

½ cup sugar (I don’t like it too sweet)
150g melted butter or ½ cup oil
1 cup of self-raising flour sifted
3 cups of grated pumpkin (I like to use the grater attachment for my food processor
Preheat oven to 180 deg. Mix together sugar and butter or oil, mix together eggs and salt and then add it to butter-sugar mixture. Add flour and grated pumpkin and mix well. Place mixture in a rectangular greased oven bake pyrex dish Bake for 45min. Do not over brown. Once out the oven sprinkle with cinnamon. Serve hot or cold. As is with cream or ice-cream.
