Diet trends are always a topic of debate. With so many diets to choose from, it can be difficult to determine which one is right for you. Many people follow these diets because they want to lose weight or improve their overall health.  Since both diets are so popular, you may be wondering how they differ. Some of our viewers have asked what’s the difference between Keto and Paleo Diet?  So let’s discuss that in today’s topic.

The Keto Diet uses healthy fats as a fuel source, while the Paleo Diet encourages healthy fats. Everyone chooses a diet for a different reason, some want to lose a lot of weight while others would prefer to tone or bulk up. Others want to improve their overall health. But how do you know which diet will suit you best?

So Keto Diet and Paleo Diet have some similar characteristics, each one is unique in its own way. Let’s take a look at both diets and see which one is right for you.

According to Thomas DeLauer… The idea behind the Paleolithic diet is to replicate the ways that our ancestors ate; ancestors could only hunt and gather – had little access to grains and no access to processed foods. The ketogenic diet is designed to completely alter your internal state, a state in which your body burns fat. The Keto diet was originally developed for disease management and to this day is being used for conditions such as epilepsy. You can read more here. So, a paleo diet, just like a keto diet, focuses on getting fat and protein as a primary source of energy. However, the big difference is paleo doesn’t avoid carbs. While both diets came about for different reasons, they are both used as effective tools for weight loss.

The Ketogenic Diet

High Protein

The keto or ketogenic, diet aims to induce ketosis through the calculated adjustment of dietary macronutrients, namely carbs, protein and fat.

The keto diet macronutrient breakdown looks something like this:

  • Fat: 60–80%
  • Protein: 20–30%
  • Carbohydrates: 5–10%

Dieters are advised to eat between 20-30 grams of carbohydrates per day. In comparison to a “standard” diet, the macronutrient distribution of the keto diet is shifted in favour of fat, with moderate protein and very few carbs. Macronutrient intake should be tightly controlled otherwise, you risk throwing your metabolism out of ketosis. Achieving ketosis with this diet plan is to induce the metabolic breakdown of fat in your body.

The Paleo Diet

This type of diet is based on the ideology of consuming meals in the same way your ancestors would have in the primordial times. That’s why, it is also called, “The Cavemen Diet” MEAT, MEAT and MORE MEAT.  Palaeolithic humans’ diets varied depending on availability and location. The basic concept of the paleo diet is to eat whole foods and avoid processed foods. Try to choose grass-fed, pasture-raised and organic if you can afford it. If not, just make sure to always go for the least processed option.

Options you have in this diet include:

  • Fish (if you’re a Fishman you can feel free to catch and eat as much as you like)
  • Meat (Steak YUM a good steak on braai delicious)
  • Poultry (chicken, turkey, duck etc.)
  • Eggs
  • Fruits (with low sugar levels)
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Oils (from coconut, avocado, olive, etc.)
  • Vegetables (excluding corn, which is classified as a grain)
  • Non-processed sweeteners (honey, coconut sugar, maple syrup etc.)

The foods and beverages below are fine in small amounts:

  • Wine: Quality red wine is high in antioxidants and beneficial nutrients.
  • Dark chocolate: Choose one that has 70% or higher cocoa content. Quality dark chocolate is very nutritious and extremely healthy.

Water should be your drink of choice when following the paleo diet. Many people also drink tea and coffee.

When it comes to Paleo vs Keto, in my opinion, the Ketogenic diet is the quickest route to achieving extreme weight loss, however, it’s much more difficult to maintain. If you’re looking to get a jump start on your health and fitness goals this year, you may be thinking about trying the keto diet. Recently, the high-fat, low-carbohydrate eating style has become popular among athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and people looking to lose weight. Did you know that you can get Keto Diet Sample?  What is the Keto Diet?

The ketogenic diet is an eating plan that drives your body into ketosis, a state where the body uses fat as a primary fuel source (instead of carbohydrates).

The keto diet aims to force your body into using a different type of fuel. Instead of relying on sugar (glucose) that comes from carbohydrates (such as grains, legumes, vegetables, and fruits), the keto diet relies on ketone bodies, a type of fuel that the liver produces from stored fat.

Burning fat seems like an ideal way to lose pounds. But getting the liver to make ketone bodies is tricky. It requires that you deprive yourself of carbohydrates, fewer than 20 to 50 grams of carbs per day (keep in mind that a medium-sized banana has about 27 grams of carbs).

When you eat less than 50 grams of carbs a day, your body eventually runs out of fuel (blood sugar) it can use quickly. This typically takes 3 to 4 days. Then you’ll start to break down protein and fat for energy, which can make you lose weight. This is called ketosis. It’s important to note that the ketogenic diet is a short term diet that is focused on weight loss rather than the pursuit of health benefits.

Who Uses It?

People use a ketogenic diet most often to lose weight, but it can help manage certain medical conditions, like epilepsy, too. It could also may help people with heart disease, certain brain diseases, and even acne, but there needs to be more research in those areas. Talk with your doctor first to find out if it’s safe for you to try a ketogenic diet, especially if you have type 1 diabetes.

Weight Loss

It is said that a ketogenic diet may help you lose more weight in the first 3 to 6 months. This may be because it takes more calories to change fat into energy than it does to change carbs into energy. It’s also possible that a high-fat, high-protein diet satisfies you more, so you eat less, but that hasn’t been proved yet.


Insulin is a hormone that lets your body use or store sugar as fuel. Ketogenic diets make you burn through this fuel quickly, so you don’t need to store it. This means your body needs and makes less insulin. These lower levels may help protect you against some kinds of cancer or even slow the growth of cancer cells. More research is needed on this.

Heart Disease

It seems strange that a diet that calls for more fat can raise “good” cholesterol and lower “bad” cholesterol, but ketogenic diets are linked to just that. It may be because the lower levels of insulin that result from these diets can stop your body from making more cholesterol. That means you’re less likely to have high blood pressure, hardened arteries, heart failure, and other heart conditions. It’s unclear how long these effects last.


Carbohydrates have been linked to this skin condition, so cutting down on them may help. ( I have actually seen this personally with my own skin) And the drop in insulin that a ketogenic diet can trigger may also help stop acne breakouts. (Insulin can cause your body to make other hormones that bring on outbreaks.) Still, more research is needed to determine exactly how much effect, if any, the diet actually has on acne.


Low-carb diets seem to help keep your blood sugar lower and more predictable than other diets. But when your body burns fat for energy, it makes compounds called ketones. If you have diabetes, particularly type 1, too many ketones in your blood can make you sick. So it’s very important to work with your doctor on any changes in your diet.

What to Eat

A ketogenic diet, or keto diet, is a very low carbohydrate eating plan that forces the body to use fat rather than glucose as a primary energy source. When you follow the plan, you build meals around fatty foods and significantly restrict your intake of carbohydrates and protein. Because the keto diet has such a high fat requirement, followers must eat fat at each meal.

If you’ve decided to move forward in trying the keto diet, you will want to stick to the eating plan. Roughly 60 to 80 percent of your calories will come from fats. That means you’ll eat meats, fats, and oils, and a very limited amount of non starchy veg.


Some healthy unsaturated fats are allowed on the keto diet — like nuts (almonds, walnuts), seeds, avocados, tofu, and olive oil. But saturated fats from oils (palm, coconut), lard, butter, and cocoa butter are encouraged in high amounts.

The end goal of a properly maintained keto diet is to force your body into this metabolic state. We don’t do this through starvation of calories but starvation of carbohydrates.

Vegetables (also rich in carbs) are restricted to leafy greens (such as kale, Swiss chard, spinach), cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, asparagus, bell peppers, onions, garlic, mushrooms, cucumber, celery, and summer squashes.

Don’t be afraid to try something new

When selecting healthy recipes, sticking to those with ingredients you know and enjoy is always a safe bet, especially if time is tight. But don’t forget to occasionally give a new, totally delicious looking recipe a try, or pick up an unfamiliar fruit or vegetable the next time you spot one at the grocery store. A few years ago my husband introduced me to fresh asparagus roasted with just a bit of butter or olive oil, with some crushed garlic and a sprinkle of salt and pepper. Yum it changed the way I feel about asparagus that’s for sure. The first time I ate asparagus was from a tin. YUK!!!  Fresh and roasted it is divine.



In conclusion, anyone learning to cook has their advantages and cooking is actually fun and it’s very exciting when you get to create new dishes for your family or friends and hear them compliment on the meal they just ate which you made.

As more and more emphasis is placed these days on eating whole foods and having meals at home, some people may be eager to embrace this home-cooking lifestyle but aren’t sure where to begin.

Teaching our children to cook helps prepare them for the future. Giving them these skills may help prevent them from getting stuck when necessity or principles call them to cook their own food. I believe that teaching children from a young age is a much-needed necessity and an advantage in life. No matter what age you are, you are never too young or too old to learn how to cook. Butternut Soup With or Without Bacon

Butternut Soup

Winter Butternut soup

This has got to be the easiest winter butternut squash soup recipe ever. You start with pre-cut squash from the supermarket,  that’s the easiest or you get your husband to peel and cut it up for you. HA HA!!! Then you basically throw everything in a pot, simmer it, purée it and you’re done. If I have bacon on hand then I usually add that too.

Great for cold winter nights with crispy bread or rolls to dunk in it.


1 onion chopped

3 tbsp butter

bacon bits (optional)

1 cubed butternut

pinch of cumin

3 cups of chicken stock

125ml cream

salt and pepper to taste


  • Heat the butter in a saucepan. Add the onion and sauté for 30 seconds.
  • Add the butternut, cumin and chicken stock and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat, cover and simmer for 15 minutes until the butternut is soft.
  • In another pan add your bacon bits and some butter and fry until crispy.
  • Remove butternut from the heat and pour into a food processor and blend until smooth.
  • Add the bacon bits, and cream last and serve with crispy bread or rolls.

Butternut soup

Put some parsley on top for garnish.

Savory Chakalaka Braai Bread

Savory Chakalaka Braai bread

The best  savory chakalaka braai bread to have with a Braai

This is another all-time favourite which family and friends request I make to have with a Lekker South African Braai.

What is Chakalala you may ask?

Chakalaka is a South African vegetable relish, usually spicy, that is traditionally served with bread, pap, samp, stews, or curries. For example, a tin of baked beans, tin of tomatoes, onion, garlic, and some curry paste can be used to make the dish. You can also add chopped butternut, corn and carrots.

Chakalaka may have originated in the townships of Johannesburg or on the gold mines surrounding Johannesburg when Mozambican mineworkers coming off shift cooked tinned produce (tomatoes, beans) with chilli to produce a spicy relish with a Portuguese flair to accompany pap.

I like to use the hot and spicy one but when there are kids around it is best to go with mild or normal.  Extra hot is just too hot for the kids. This recipe is so easy to make 5 min prepare time and 45 min to bake. I usually make this and my Pumpkin pie for such occasions. I highly recommend you try this.


500ml cake flour

15ml baking powder

salt and pepper

4 extra large eggs lightly whisked

410g chakalaka

80ml of grated cheese (to sprinkle on top)

1 handful of grated cheese to through in the mixture

Some chopped feta if you like feta


  • Preheat oven to 180 deg Celcius.
  • Spray a bread loaf tin with non-stick cook and spray.
  • Sift dry ingredients together
  • Add eggs, cheese and chakalaka
  • Mix well and spoon into a loaf tin.
  • Sprinkle with extra cheese if desired
  • Bake for +- 45 min until a knife inserted comes out clean.
  • Serve hot or cold with butter

Scrambled Egg Muffins

So quick and easy,


The great thing about these Scrambled Egg Breakfast Muffins is you can personalize them to your taste.

Don’t like meat? Leave the meat out. Don’t like tomatoes? No need to add them. Love tomatoes? Then, by all means, add as much as you would like. I often add fresh chopped parsley from my garden too.

You can add whatever you like or have around the house to make this tasty quick on the go snack. Here I will be using pork sausages, by all means, add whatever you’re in the mood for.  These are awesome with bacon bits. YUM!!

Makes 12


500g pork sausage

12 large eggs

1/2 cup chopped onion

1/4 cup chopped green pepper

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon pepper

1/4 teaspoon garlic powder or crushed garlic

1/2 cup chopped mushrooms (my kids don’t really like mushrooms so I only put them in half the batch)

1/2 cup cheddar cheese

1/2 cup feta


Brown sausages, drain, beat eggs, add onion, green pepper, salt, pepper, garlic and mushrooms.  Stir in sausage and cheeses. Spoon by 1/3 cupfuls into a greased muffin pan. Bake at 180 deg Celsius for 20-25 min or until a knife inserted comes out clean.

If you were using mini muffin pan bake for 10 min or until a knife inserted comes out clean. Mini muffins are great for party snacks.

Milk Tart – # 1 Foodtruck

Milk Tart


Milk tart # 1 is a classic South African heritage recipe and it’s utterly delicious. This recipe is relatively quick to make and you need to be on the ball when making the filling and stirring constantly. Easy and fluffy, I have tried a few different recipes and eventually mixed and matched to create this amazing dish. Best of all it tastes better than the shop bought ones. You can make it crustless, one with a base or one with tennis biscuits or any other biscuit you like.

I’ll give you a simple base recipe and biscuit one, feel free to try each one and let us know which you prefer.

This recipe makes 2 tarts and yes you will definitely eat both. My 7-year-old son loves sweet dishes and he was a bit sceptical to try this dish when he saw me making it. Once he did he just could not get enough of it. I’m pretty sure he ate half a tart all by himself.

Base 1

250ml Cake flour

5ml baking powder

2ml salt

80 ml sugar

100g butter ( For best results I only make milk tart with butter although margarine can be used)

1 extra large egg

Base 2 

1 pk of crushed tennis biscuits or your prefered choice

I usually guess on my butter amount but I would say about half cup softened. You want to mix this together and pat it down into your two greased 23cm pie plates.


750 ml of milk

80g butter or margarine (BEST results BUTTER)

80ml cake flour

4 extra large eggs, separated

100ml sugar

ground cinnamon for sprinkling

  • Base 1: Sift flour, baking powder and salt. Add sugar and rub in the butter. Add beaten egg and mix well to a soft dough.
  • Base 2: Mix crushed biscuits and butter.
  • Press dough or biscuits into 2 greased 23cm pie plates.
  • Filling: Heat milk in a heavy-based saucepan. Add butter, melt and remove from heat.
  • Sift flour and salt, add egg yolks with sugar and beat well.  ( I usually use a wooden spoon here)
  • Add some of the heated milk to the egg mixture, stir well and pour back into the saucepan.  Boil for a few minutes until thick, stirring constantly, and remove from heat.
  • Beat egg whites until soft peak stage and fold lightly into cooked mixture. Pour filling into the 2 bases.
  • If you have opted for Base 1 then bake in a preheated oven at 180 deg Celsius for about 20 min, sprinkle ground cinnamon over the top and bake for another 10 min minutes. If you have opted for Base 2 or no base then only bake for about 15-20 min and once out the oven then sprinkle with cinnamon. Allow to cool to room temperature before putting it in the fridge to set completely. ENJOY! / EET LEKKER! YUMMY!!!
